I met Dr. Wintermute as a high school senior when I worked the summer of 1959 in the lab and x-ray at Reed Memorial Hospital. My interest in science, planted in Bennett Jeter's biology and chemistry classes, bloomed in that lab and flourished. I truly learned a lot because Doc had a lot to teach those of us who worked for him, and he was a good teacher.
In turn, I had the opportunity to teach three of his children. It was truly a pleasure. They, all six, are bright, unique individuals, who have forged their own way in life, as did he.
It's all been said before. He's "one of a kind." "When God made him he broke the mold." An incredibly intelligent human with the intuition of an excellent physician, Doc will be remembered fondly by us all.

Our hearts go out to you with the passing of your father and an old friend of ours. I first met Dean in 1964 when I took my grandmother to him at the Wintermute Hospital at Klondike. I had heard of his reputation and my trust was not misplaced. I'm sure he knew of the seriousness of her condition and referred her to Dallas for the best treatment possible. She always appreciated Dean's courteous, kind attention, even though she was not to survive the condition he uncovered.
Later, in 1969, he delivered our daughter, Ginny, at Mount Pleasant. I informed her when we learned of Dean's death that the first person to see her and to hold her had died and she joins us in expressing her sadness and condolences.
May each of you, his family, find peace and solace in our Lord's promise, and know that many others join you in mourning his passing.
