Obituary of Roy Dean Houchins

Roy Dean “Dean-o” Houchins, age 67, passed away at his home with his family by his side on Monday, September 10, 2018, in Charleston, Texas.

Dean was born on April 21, 1951, in Honey Grove, Texas, to Wendell and Lorene (Fisher) Houchins.

When Dean was thirteen years old, his father passed away, and Lorene moved her three sons to Charleston to be closer to her parents. Dean immediately fell in love with country living and the community that he would call home for the rest of his life.

On June 14, 1969, Dean married Donna Virgel at the East Delta Baptist Church, and they have made Charleston their home for the past 49 years. He retired from Nordstrom Valve in Sulphur Springs, Texas, where he worked as a machinist.

Dean loved to spend time hunting, fishing, and hosting cookouts for his family and friends. He shared many great times with his best friends, Huck Elmore and Eddie Trapp. After his retirement, Dean purchased a Kubota tractor that would keep him busy shredding pastures, plowing gardens, and repairing driveways for people in the community. He enjoyed helping his neighbors, and he wanted everyone to love Charleston as much as he did. He was often humorously called “The Mayor of Charleston.”

He is survived by his wife, Donna; other survivors include a daughter Deena White and husband Chad of Post Oak, son; Wesley Houchins and wife Jennifer of Charleston, four grandchildren; Haley White, Ty Oliver (and girlfriend Chelsea Kimberling and her son Brannan), Trenton Jones, and Tanner Houchins, two brothers; Jimmy Lair and wife Patty, Roger Houchins and wife Kathy, two favorite aunts Frances Owens and Joyce Flanery, two sisters-in-laws; Sharon Houchins and Frances Houchins, and one step-sister, Avon Schultz. 

Memorial services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 15, 2018 at the East Delta Baptist Church with Brother Jake Vaughn officiating. Family will receive friends at the church from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service.
